What is Myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) is one of the most prevalent eye conditions across the globe. It causes close-up objects to appear clear, while objects further away appear blurry. This occurs because the eye is too long, causing incoming light to focus too far forward in the eye.

Beyond blurry vision, myopia also significantly increases a child’s risk of developing sight-threatening eye diseases later in life.

Myopia is caused by several factors but is usually linked to genetics. Children with parents who have myopia are more likely to develop it themselves. Environmental factors also play an important role in myopia onset and progression. Increased sun exposure and limited screen time can decrease a child’s risk of developing high myopia.

Myopia Treatment in Wyckoff

Our eye clinic offers various methods of myopia management to slow or stop the progression of your child’s myopia. Over time, this can minimize their risk of developing potentially sight-threatening eye diseases, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.

For younger children, we usually start out with special atropine drops to slow or prevent myopia progression and move on to specialized eyeglasses and contact lenses as your child grows older.

For more information about how myopia management can help maintain your child’s vision and eye health, contact our Wyckoff eye care team today.
